Mobile Subscriber Usage – US & Europe

Mobile Subscribers from Major Cell Markets. Source: M:Metrics

For those trying to determine whether to plan for mobile technologies, M:Metrics has come out with some interesting stats on mobile subscribers in the US and major European markets. With rapid adoption in the next two years of converged devices such as the BlackBerry Thunder and the Apple iPhone, growth in Internet usage (social network sites, news, sports, weather, media access, and applications such as productivity and game downloads) is expected to increase dramatically. If you haven't considered planning for a mobile version of your website, it should start showing up on your radar. To build on a recent post, mobile subscriber growth is increasing faster than Internet access over the last 5 years and is cheaper to roll-out than building fixed Internet connectivity such as cable or adsl. Marketing initiatives will also be increasing for mobile technologies and will be introduced in mobile video, sms messaging, mail (such as mobile Gmail), instant messengers, social network sites and … [Read more...]

The Age of Internet TV

I was reading an article on CrunchGear today that sparked further thought on the future of marketing and technology. It is no secret that both Apple and LG Electronics/Netflix have competing Internet TV products. Now, Sharp will be including limited Internet access through TVs as well: The most interesting point by far about the new TVs is the (restricted) Internet capability they come with. Sharp said it will be possible not only to surf Sharp’s aquos.jp homepage but also Yahoo! Japan (this country’s most popular web site). Proud owners of the new Aquos TVs can also view digitized print magazines via a Japanese Internet TV portal and access video-on-demand in HD. Looking at the bigger picture, most of these services will need to be funded by advertising. Google has successfully developed the ability to insert ads into mainstream TV via its TVAds Adwords program. Basically, customers can bid to have their ads displayed during showtimes in local markets. As well, Apple's current … [Read more...]

Internet versus Cell Phone Usage

Just to add to my comment on mobile users versus internet users there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, mobile adoption has occurred much faster than Internet adoption in the last 5 years. Second, mobile penetration occurs to a much greater extent in underdeveloped countries where Internet access isn't available or is quite costly. Compounding this is the cost of the access device: Computers range from several hundred to several thousand $US while cell phones can be purchased for much less (sub-$100 US) making them much more affordable. The chart  below shows approximately 250 million cell phone users in 2007. In the US penetration for cell phones is pegged at 82.4% as can be seen here. … [Read more...]

A New View on Mobile Tech

I am sure many people were wondering how long it would take for me to include Apple in one of my posts. I have admired Apple ever since I purchased an iMac for my wife back in 1999. After spending a weekend configuring and setting up a brand new Pentium PC and uninstalling all the crudware that came standard on most systems, I thought I finally had a system I was happy with. It took me about 16 hours to get everything setup, configured, working with my mail, connecting via dialup to the Internet. I felt rather smug and pleased with myself. During that week I received a call from Jeff (the CEO of BuildDirect) offering me a chance to help build a dream - help build a company that would change an industry. A pretty compelling offer for sure. I had lived in Ontario for almost a decade and it was a difficult decision at first. My wife's family were all in Ontario and this would be a big change for both of us. She surprised me greatly when she thought it was a great opportunity. We knew that … [Read more...]
