Apple 3G iPhone Heading to Canadian Shores

ImportGenius

After much anticipation and a significant amount of patience, it appears Canadian shipments for the next-generation 3G iPhone have arrived in Vancouver. A report from ImportGenius indicates Schenker had a number of shipments that had an arrival notification address in Vancouver, Canada. Combined with confirmation from both Apple and Rogers, these shipments appear to coincide with the expected 3G iPhone announcement at the WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference) on June 9th. Here is a quote from the ImportGenius report: The initial shipments were followed on March 27, April 28, May 6 and May 17 with an additional 44 containers—each containing an estimated 40,000 units of the new phone. The sixteen containers imported by Apple Inc. itself—as opposed to the Quanta subsidiary—were delivered on March 19 and 27 to the Jonestown, Pa. facilities of Ingram Micro, Apple’s U.S. distribution partner.  The Quanta Computer USA shipments were delivered to that company’s distribution … [Read more...]

Mobile Subscriber Usage – US & Europe

Mobile Subscribers from Major Cell Markets. Source: M:Metrics

For those trying to determine whether to plan for mobile technologies, M:Metrics has come out with some interesting stats on mobile subscribers in the US and major European markets. With rapid adoption in the next two years of converged devices such as the BlackBerry Thunder and the Apple iPhone, growth in Internet usage (social network sites, news, sports, weather, media access, and applications such as productivity and game downloads) is expected to increase dramatically. If you haven't considered planning for a mobile version of your website, it should start showing up on your radar. To build on a recent post, mobile subscriber growth is increasing faster than Internet access over the last 5 years and is cheaper to roll-out than building fixed Internet connectivity such as cable or adsl. Marketing initiatives will also be increasing for mobile technologies and will be introduced in mobile video, sms messaging, mail (such as mobile Gmail), instant messengers, social network sites and … [Read more...]

The Age of Internet TV

I was reading an article on CrunchGear today that sparked further thought on the future of marketing and technology. It is no secret that both Apple and LG Electronics/Netflix have competing Internet TV products. Now, Sharp will be including limited Internet access through TVs as well: The most interesting point by far about the new TVs is the (restricted) Internet capability they come with. Sharp said it will be possible not only to surf Sharp’s aquos.jp homepage but also Yahoo! Japan (this country’s most popular web site). Proud owners of the new Aquos TVs can also view digitized print magazines via a Japanese Internet TV portal and access video-on-demand in HD. Looking at the bigger picture, most of these services will need to be funded by advertising. Google has successfully developed the ability to insert ads into mainstream TV via its TVAds Adwords program. Basically, customers can bid to have their ads displayed during showtimes in local markets. As well, Apple's current … [Read more...]

What is going on with the OLPC Initiative?

What a love/hate relationship! Nicholas Negroponte, One Laptop Per Child's chairman, and Microsoft Corp. announced on Thursday that Microsoft would be offering Windows XP at a $3 license fee to be installed on the XO laptop. Targeted at $100, the XO laptop currently costs just under $200 and needs to meet critical mass to drop the price down to that level. It is VERY telling though that Microsoft has finally agreed to offer it's operating system to the OLPC initiative. First off, Microsoft is getting concerned about losing its' market share in the Operating System category. The OLPC XO laptop currently runs Linux. Traditionally, Microsoft has been anti-open source. Also, Apple's Mac OS X Leopard is increasingly gaining market share in the consumer sector and is expected to take another huge leap when the 3G iPhone is expected to be released worldwide in June. The IPhone runs a full version of Apple's operating system. Microsoft is obviously slowly feeling pressure against … [Read more...]
