Why this and why now?

by Dan Brodie on May 14, 2008

I first thought about writing a blog several months ago. I feel that the experiences learned from being immersed in a growing, thriving company such as ours can give others an insight that is hard to find elsewhere. At our company, we are trying to change an industry while creating a company that will survive even our children’s children. And changing an industry like the building industry is, to people without a dream, almost insurmountable. To accomplish this, we use technology to overcome many of the hurdles facing one of the most fragmented industries in the world. We provide a service to our customers as well as the products we sell we need to adapt and change with technology while staying focused to our core vision.

Jeff, our CEO, described innovation and building on his dream as a “long walk through the dark forest”. I’d encourage reading his article here. In his article he states:

One of the challenges of building to a market that does not yet exist is that it implies that most people will not understand the opportunity. This is the reason I call it the long walk through the darkness.  It is a lonely soul searching time as the entrepreneur comes up against walls that they must overcome or face failure. As the business attracts more people the walk becomes easier as the forest opens up a bit. It is easier and easier to see the opening ahead. There may still be challenges, but at the very least there is now a team to tackle the challenges together.

In building our team, and having the team aligned and working towards a specific set goals, we are able to pull back the branches in the forest that are blocking our path. As we break through and come out the other side, we will find we have forged a wide path that will make it easier for others to follow.

In this blog I’ll be sharing my thoughts on using technology to help “pull back the branches” that may slow down our march through the forest. I’ll share what some of the great things are that we have done, some of the mistakes made along the way, and share my thoughts on where technology may lead us. If I can answer any of your questions along the way, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
